Menachem “Muni” Balaban, the liturgical cantor, was born in Tighina, Bessarabia, in 1907. Early on in his career he performed as a soloist in the choirs of the famous cantors Leibele Glantz and Arele Gelfand. He also sang as a soloist in the choir of his brother, the cantor Mordechai Balaban. There followed a term as the chazzan of the Great Synagogues of Bender and Kishinev.

He emigrated in 1935 to Argentina, becoming the chazzan of the Central Temple of Buenos Aires. He then began a career as an international cantor: Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1951; Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1952 and 1953. In 1954 he officiated at the Stone Avenue Talmud Torah in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, and afterwards at “Ein Yaakov” in the Bronx in 1955, at “Shaare Zedek”, at the United Nations synagogue in New York, at Grossinger’s, at the “Kehilat Israel” Temple in Newark, New Jersey, in Toronto, Canada, in Panama and in many other places. Over the years he also gave concerts.

He emigrated in 1969 to Israel, serving between 1971 and 1974 as the chief chazzan of “Heichal Shelomo” in Jerusalem.

Gifted with a lyric tenor voice and a sweet tone, he prayed with Chassidic enthusiasm. His interpretation of the prayers, his admirers testified, brought the audience to spiritual fervor.

He never felt comfortable with the artificial setting of the recording studio; still, he recorded a few 78 rpm records with RCA-Victor, rare today. Apart from those, all the recordings gathered here come from private collections.
